A grand jury in Toms River charged Mashon Wilson with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and causing a death while driving with a suspended license, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.
Two acquaintances -- Shana Lee, 49, and Iyanna Hall, 30 -- were charged with attempting to interfere with the police investigation after telling officers that Lee was driving at the time, Billhimer said.
Wilson's license was suspended when his 2018 Nissan Sentra colided with a 2019 Chevy Suburban at West County Line Road and Cedar Road in Lakewood on Nov. 25, 2018, the indictment says.
The Suburban was sent crashing into a tree, critically injuring its driver, David Abayev, 21, of Lakewood, and killing a passenger, Yechiel Yitzchak Finegold, it says.
Police eventually traced the fleeing Sentra to a house on Lynn Court in Lakewood, where the two women told them that Lee was the hit-and-run driver, authorities said.
Investigators soon after determined that Wilson was driving and that Lee and Hall had lied.
Records show Wilson was arrested last week and charged with stealing from the Bnos Yisroel elementary School on Prospect Street during a burglary.
